Botnet Detection by Monitoring Similar Communication Patterns
نویسندگان
چکیده
Botnet is most widespread and occurs commonly in today‘s cyber attacks, resulting in serious threats to our network assets and organization’s properties. Botnets are collections of compromised computers (Bots) which are remotely controlled by its originator (BotMaster) under a common Command-andControl (C&C) infrastructure. They are used to distribute commands to the Bots for malicious activities such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, spam and phishing. Most of the existing Botnet detection approaches concentrate only on particular Botnet command and control (C&C) protocols (e.g., IRC,HTTP) and structures (e.g., centralized), and can become ineffective as Botnets change their structure and C&C techniques. In this paper at first we provide taxonomy of Botnets C&C channels and evaluate well-known protocols which are being used in each of them. Then we proposed a new general detection framework which currently focuses on P2P based and IRC based Botnets. This proposed framework is based on definition of Botnets. Botnet has been defined as a group of bots that perform similar communication and malicious activity patterns within the same Botnet. The point that distinguishes our proposed detection framework from many other similar works is that there is no need for prior knowledge of Botnets such as Botnet signature. Keywords-Botnet; Bot; centralized; decentralized; P2P; similar behavior

A Model for Covert Botnet Communication in a Private Subnet
Recently, botnets utilizing peer-to-peer style communication infrastructures have been discovered, requiring new approaches to detection and monitoring techniques. Current detection methods analyze network communication patterns, identifying systems that may have been recruited into the botnet. This paper presents a localized botnet communication model that enables a portion of compromised syst...

Botnets are now the key platform for many Internet attacks, such as spam, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS), identity theft, and phishing. Most of the current botnet detection approaches work only on specific botnet command and control (C&C) protocols (e.g., IRC) and structures (e.g., centralized), and can become ineffective as botnets change their C&C techniques. In this paper, we present a...
متن کاملAdaptive pattern mining model for early detection of botnet-propagation scale
Botnets are a disastrous threat because they execute malicious activities such as distributed denial-of-service, spam email, malware downloads (such as eggdownloads), and spying by exploiting zombie PCs under their control. Botnets infect PCs on a huge scale by initially scanning the service ports of vulnerable applications for the purpose of propagation, which is leveraged as the size of the b...
متن کاملMining the Network Behavior of Bots
A botnet is a network of compromised hosts that fulfills the malicious intents of an attacker. Once installed, a bot is typically used to steal sensitive information, send SPAM, perform DDoS attacks, and other illegal activities. Research in botnet detection has been quite prolific in the past years, producing detection mechanisms that focus on specific command and control structures, or on the...

Nowadays, botnets are considered as essential tools for planning serious cyberattacks. Botnets are used to perform various malicious activities such as DDoSattacks and sending spam emails. Different approaches are presented to detectbotnets; however most of them may be ineffective when there are only a fewinfected hosts in monitored network, as they rely on similarity in...
